About State Auditor Charlie Janssen
Greetings From Auditor Janssen
"The Salvation of the State is Watchfulness in the Citizen."
As one of five elected constitutional officers, the State Auditor provides an independent and objective assessment of the State of Nebraska's governmental operations. The Auditor of Public Account's (APA) office is working to help provide efficient, reliable, and responsive government.
The APA regularly reviews government operations to ensure compliance with State and Federal laws. We also assess the adequacy of current controls over billions of dollars of State and Federal spending by State agencies and political subdivisions.
This information is released to the public in report form and is available at our website, www.auditors.nebraska.gov, or by request from our office.
As required by law the State Lottery, Retirement Systems, and a few other agencies are audited annually. All other agencies are scheduled for regular reviews, or audits, on a "risk-based" cycle. If an audit is conducted that reveals higher risks of fraud, waste, or abuse, the agency is placed on an annual audit schedule.
In addition to the agency work conducted by the APA, we audit all county courts, State colleges, and several counties. We annually review budgets and audits, or grant audit waivers, for over 2,700 local political subdivisions. All of this information is available to the public on our website databases.
We conduct the annual audits of Federal financial activities (Single Audit), University financial activities, and the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the State.
Our Special Audit and Evaluation Unit manages a 'whistle-blower' hotline you can call, anonymously if necessary, to report suspected abuse of government resources, and we assist political subdivisions and State agencies with a variety of special procedures that include fraud investigations and specific financial or performance reviews.
We work hard for you and our job is to help make sure Nebraska taxpayers get what they pay for!
Thank you for visiting!
